Our Children:

There’s a special group of children living in the mountains of Nayong county of Guizhou province. They are called children without care of their parents. They live with their grandparents. It is quite normal that their fathers died and their mother left the village. The children make up about 10% of the local children.

The youngest child was still an infant when her mother had left her. The eldest was about 4 when their parents had left them. They had to do housework or fieldwork while other children are beloved and cared. They had no one to care about them. Sometimes, they took out the photo of their mother from a drawer and touch her face on the photo. Or they went to their fathers’ tomb and spoke to the grave. They barely eat full and stay in shabby rooms. Some of them did not have a bed.

Shortage of materials was not the main problem. They had to bear great mental pains. In the other children’s eyes, they have been abandoned by their mothers. They just hide themselves in the corner and keep silent. They are the targets being bullied. She loves drawing and nothing had been left. They do not want their grandparents to be sick. They could not afford to lose their only family. They would like to call mom, but no one would answer.

Our Project:

In 2012, we initiated a project to help the children without parents in Nayong county. We supported 200 children for the first session. Now the group was increased to 404 children. The group can reach 3000 children in Nayong. We provide about 1000RMB worth of materials to each child in one year. The project was implementing by a local organization named Loving Nayong Public Service Federation. The materials include rice, food oil, clothes, stationeries and other life necessities. The materials improved their living standards. To ensure the reliable of the project, we visited all families and registered all children. The volunteers even sent the materials to the children in person.

We also support 120RMB to children to raise chicken or ducks, which aimed to cultivate their awareness of independent. Unexpectedly, the small animals became good friends of the children. The happiest thing in a day is to take their chicken or ducks to the field to feed after school every day.

The project had planned to do consulting for the children, but it had not carried out due to the limited funds. In 2013, we had provided consulting activity to 60 children in a school. A famous children psychologist did the consulting, which received great results. The activity found 53.85% of children need long-term consulting, and 10% of them need urgent psychological aid.

Thanks to the funds support for the project this year, consulting activity could be done for 259 children from 11 primary schools. The children kept silent, lonely and closed when they first saw the consulting teacher. When the activity was done, they smiled happily. A girl said, “it is the happiest day in my life.” You may not know the smiles are very rare and valuable for these children. Their teacher said, “I have never seen them so happy.” An observational visitor said, “the activity is beyond its value. I think, we can take it as the turning point of the children.”

Project Plan:

Our project has been carrying out for 4 years, which helped 414 children. For limited funds, we has not been able to expand it. Our plan in 3 years is as followings.

1. According to capacity of the local volunteers, our target children will be increased to 800 children. 1000RMB worth of materials will be supported to each child.

2. Activity will be implemented in following aspects:
1) On-site consulting. The consulting team station in each school for 1 week.
2) Teachers’ training. Consulting from Shanghai is short-term. Long-term consulting activity should be done by local teachers.

Firstly, Xu Guangxing, a well-known children psychologist from East China Normal University visited during summer holidays. His consulting received positive feedbacks.
Secondly, trained teachers will establish QQ groups or Wechat groups. Professor Xu Guangxing will recruit 2 coaches in Shanghai to answer questions for each group.
Thirdly, with assistance from East China Normal University, we provide teachers working with children education in rural areas training opportunities in Shanghai.

Project Budget:

1) Materials for 800 children each year are 800,000RMB. 2.4 million yuan for 3 years. We can raise about 200,000RMB from enterprises each year, so we hope to raise another 1.8 million yuan for 3 years apart from 600,000RMB we can raised from enterprises.

2) Consulting activity expenses. In 2015, we provided consulting for 259 children in 11 primary schools, which spent about 64300RMB. We planned to do the activity twice a year for 400 children. The budget will be 150,000RMB per year. 450,000RMB for 3 years. Teachers’ training and QQ groups will be 50,000RMB per year and 150,000RMB for 3 years.

3) The total expenses will be 2.4 million yuan. It is a 3-year plan.

We are a tri-angle (Loving Nayong Pulic Service Federation, Xinming Evening Paper and Shanghai Minxing District Bright Association) to support the children without parents. For 4 years, we have been carrying out the project steadily. We awarded several prizes. The chairman of Loving Nayong Public Service Federation was invited to watch military parade in Beijing on October 1.
