Grounded on core values of respect, love, and service to the elderly, the Xin Yue Senior Citizen Service Center of Chongqing promotes social work services for senior citizens and builds harmonious living environment for them.
With the Chinese New Year dawning, volunteers held rich and colorful activities for the community's senior citizens at the Service Center on January 31, 2013.
At 9 in the morning, the ceremony planned by Xin Yue Senior Citizen Service Center started. Madam Wang played Guzheng (a kind of Chinese musical instrument) while two old men, 92 and 98 respectively, performed calligraphy. Considering how some of the older men with paralysis could not go out for activities, we prepared fruits, traditional candies, and other nourishment for them. We also decorated their rooms with lanterns and window decorations.
In the afternoon, activities continued with guessing games, which got our guests busy. Grandpa Wang participated in basketball shooting while riding on his wheel chair guided by one of the volunteers. He won the first prize and got a reward. He said with smile, “The activity was fun and I won an award in the wheel chair!” The audience offered their hails and clapping when someone won in a game. The activities closed with laughter and cheers.
The happiness of the aged comes not only from a pair of socks, an apple, or a carton of milk, but also from the care and love they feel from interacting with others. The goods distributed throughout our activities were donated by student volunteers, community members, and the Service Center. There were 68 volunteers who gave their time and 220 senior citizens who participated. We interviewed some of the participants after the activity. Seeing Grandma Zhou express her gratefulness in tears, we will do our best to bring her and the other elderly happiness in their later years.
