Grounded on core values of respect, love, and service to the elderly, the Xin Yue Senior Citizen Service Center of Chongqing promotes social work services for senior citizens and builds harmonious living environment for them.
To greet 4 new senior citizens arriving at the Center, 6 volunteers from Xin Yue and Tsinghua Middle school held a welcome party. Many senior citizens at the center participated in the activity.
It was a hot day, and the primary goal of our activity was to ensure the safety and good health of the elderly people, so volunteers and social workers did a full on-site check, used time management skills, offered a pick-up service and provided emergency aid. In the activity, newcomers did a self-introduction, then the volunteers led them in interactive games and let them share their feelings about living in the nursing home.
During the activity, the old people described their personal circumstances. From their self-introductions, we felt bitterness and helplessness from their words. Some of them have no one to depend on, some of them stay far away from their children and some of them suffer from serious illnesses. In spite of all that, they chose to spend the rest of their lives here. But for most of them, they would rather choose to stay with their family if that was an option. In spite of these difficulties, they displayed amazing perseverance. Whenever a newcomer completed his speech, the other people gave him warm applause and greetings. Words of encouragement and caring brought confidence to the newcomers. After the activity, the social workers shared their feelings with the volunteers.
