Sporting East Villagers T-shirts, the EV interns presented their final projects to Mr. and Mrs. Chao last Friday. Ally and Kevin went first, explaining their findings on the usage of drugs and alcohol among high school students. A report and infographics of their drugs and alcohol project will be sent to all the participants in the survey. Sophia, Janna, and Isabel then showed how they had captured the impact of human trafficking through art. They created four pieces of artwork that depicted how the victims of human trafficking felt. The human trafficking project will be on display at different places in the community, including the Los Altos Library.
Afterwards, the interns, Steve, Nancy, and the Chaos went out to lunch for a final celebration, as many of the interns will be leaving for college next fall. Dear friends, A big "THANK YOU" to everyone who participated in the Sahaya International Art Show (Click here for more information about this event!) this past Saturday, March 30th, 2013. It was a very inspiring event and everyone had a blast! Most importantly, 100% of the donations - without the loss of a single penny -will go directly to Vietnam to aid those families living in impoverished conditions and to aid poor children who lack adequate education. All proceeds of the card sales are used to help people in India. We owe much gratitude to all the talented, kind, and generous artists who donated 100% of their beautiful art to the charity art show: Andy Gouveia, Ria Fresnoza, Jamie Giannotti, Vinnie Vertie, Hoang Pham, Ian Wing, Chung Truong, Tiffanie Truong, and Sidd Cheetancheri. A special thanks to all the volunteers who selflessly devoted their time, effort, and heart to make this humanitarian effort possible! They aim to help children living in poverty who lost love ones to the disaster.
Unfortunately, donated funds were not sent to the children on time in March due to a contingency. However, we fully understand the children's needs and expectation and we recently sent the fund for March and April to the school. We were not able to see all the sponsored children, but we saw their parents and talked to them, encouraging them to support their children and telling them that the current situation will be improved in the future. About 80 patients and their family members from all over the country participated in World Day of Pulmonary Hypertension activities. We provided a small subsidy for travel and free accommodation for some of the patients. Two of the patients had especially unusual circumstances. One was an 82-year-old man and another was a baby under one year of age. Their stories show that PAH can hit people at every age. Many factors can cause pulmonary hypertension. We invited doctors from many disciplines and from over 10 hospitals, who gave free consultations to the patients. During the meeting, many patients were able to make a reservation directly or were hospitalized via the green channel. The doctors were also hired as profession advisers for Lseek and will provide long-term consultation for the patients. Du’an Loving Public Welfare Association's work involves education support, poverty alleviation, environmental protection, and left-behind children.
On May 21st, 5 people from the Du’an Loving Public Welfare Association taught security education to many students on how to use the facilities in two One Amusement Parks in two primary schools. Meanwhile, students were organized in groups and competed with each other in a variety of games, which enhanced their sense of community. I was married in 2001, and the income of my family was low. I was diagnosed with congenital heart disease when I was a child and was unable to work. My wife works in a shopping mall as a cleaner and earns 600RMB (95 dollars) a month. Our child was born on February 7, 2004. Our baby was found to be bleeding on the second day after his birth. He was sent to Harbin Hospital and was diagnosed with hemophilia. We spent 40,000 RMB to treat our child. Our friends did not want to lend money to us and we had to take our son back from the hospital and take care of him ourselves. Luckily, the community residents committee got to know our situation and gave us basic subsistence allowances. My wife had to take care of me and our child every day. Other children could go to school, but our child couldn't. He could not even get down or up the stairs. We could not afford to stay in a hospital, so we gave our child his injections ourselves. We have to borrow money every month for medicine. My son, born in 2010, brought a lot of happiness to my family. My child grew up day by day, but his body began to show black and blue marks when he was 7 months old. But I did not pay special attention to this, because I worked in the city and I thought it was normal that a child would fall over. This was until December 2011 when I found my child’s mouth was bleeding, oozing a little, not much, but this blood could not be stopped. He had been bleeding for 4 days when I took him to the hospital. The doctor said it was a blood problem and asked us to take him to Nanjing Children’s Hospital. My son was diagnosed with hemophilia and had to transfuse FVIII regularly. But this illness cannot be completely cured and FVIII transfusions cost a lot of money. My family is poor and the treatment costs so much money, so my relatives urged me to abandon the child. Seeing my wife spending her days in tears and without food, I had to plan to give up my child. I had planned to take my child to Xi’an and leave him in a big hospital, which might be better for him. But when I saw my son’s innocent smile and my wife’s unwilling eyes, I blamed myself deeply and felt pain in my heart. I decided to take my child back home and never think of giving up him again. Now I am working hard to earn as much money as possible for my son. Though my pay is not high, I will try my best. Whatever the result, I will never give up.
