Little Red Scarf is in Lanzhou, Gansu province and provides financial support and encouragement to children suffering from congenital heart disease. In addition, they provide families with post-operative care and help the children sustain a healthy lifestyle.
My name is Guang Feng. I am naughty so many people don’t like me. They don’t know me well. I love everything around me, and I am curious about everything. I was diagnosed with congenital heart disease. With the help of Little Red Scarf, I was admitted to the hospital and began receiving examinations and treatment before the surgery. I don’t like shots. It’s true and you will see how scared I was when the nurses came, but they always won. In June, our application to attend training on social entrepreneurship skills, held by the British Embassy, was approved. With the support of the seed fund from TFish, I attended the training on July 1. Social entrepreneurship means solving social problems via market rules. I think it’s a solution for many of the economic conditions in Chinese. This is my first time becoming involved in international public welfare. I made many friends from different places. During the 3-day training, we exchanged views and learned from each other. I want to thank the British Embassy for providing such a nice platform, and I want to thank TFish for providing me with this opportunity. Though we just started, we already have support. The most impressive case in the workshop was that of the Qiang Embroidery Plan supported by the One Foundation. This is a project dedicated to leading the Qiang ethnic minority to revive their traditional embroidery. I think this project is similar to our operation and is worth learning. 3 days is short and we had to leave before really getting to know each other. But I wish good luck to all of them. Everyone has a dream,, and I hope they will make it happen. The online chat groups give them courage and respond for their needs.
The living conditions in the village were poor so my mum did not go and see a doctor. I got a high fever when I was 6 months old, and my superstitious grandmother did not allow my parents to take me to the hospital, instead, she cut a yellow paper figure and put it beneath my pillow. The high fever damaged my brain, which resulted in mixed cerebral palsy. My body could not keep its balance, and I could not walk. Mum was cursed and looked down upon by relatives, friends, and neighbors because of me so she had to stay with me at home. My dad had to work for the whole family, in order to pay my medical bills. Sometimes, we could not afford daily necessities. I was not able to go to school, so my mum taught me words at home. I like embroidery and I learned to do cross-stitch and bead embroidery with feet. I don't remember how many times my toes have been pierced. Later my works were selected to be shown in a provincial competition, and then they were chosen to attend the World Expo. I would like to let people know I am not a useless person. I want my parents to be proud of me. Now I have found opportunities via internet. Since 2012, I began to use Qzone and Micro-Blog to help deliver helpseek messages. In order to provide better help, I started a QQ Group for disabled people. Our group received attention and support from more and more people. Now the group has 200 members- we started with only 20! Some of these people are unable to move at all, they have to use their nose or mouth to hold a chopstick to type, or they have to seek help from their disabled friends. Some of these people have hemophilia, and some of them were disabled by an accident, but could not afford treatment. Some people experienced family violence or were dumped by their spouses. I feel pain and sorrow whenever I hear these situations. According to their motto - “Love, truth, and service to community” - Xingyang Volunteer Federation works to enhance people’s sense of social responsibility through providing them various volunteer opportunities. The office is in Xingyang, Henan province.
Wang Mengli and Wang Qiufen, both supported by the Xingyang Volunteer Federation, are suffering from serious illnesses. Thankfully, they are now in stable condition. According to our plan, we will make at least one phone call to them per month and pay them a visit. On April 18, we sent 2500 yuan to each of them at the Xingyang People’s Hospital for the treatment. The money came from TFish Fund. Wang Mengli needed dialysis so her mother took the money for her. Wang Qiufen took the money herself. On May 16, we called Wang Mengli. She had been admitted to the hospital because she has difficulty breathing, and her brother took care of her. Now she has rented a small room near the hospital with only a bed and a table in it. Her husband even found a job near Xing Yang in order to take care of her, but he comes back home very late every day. We called Wang Qiufen and visited her son in the Liuhe Primary School. Wang Qiufen suffered from heart pain due to her medicine, but she has to take these cardiovascular drugs. The teacher said her son, Zhang Pan, works hard and does well in school. When we saw Zhang Pan, we found there were holes in his pants. We asked Wang Qiufen to come to our warehouse and take some clothes. After a few days, she came and took 7 articles of clothing. On June 23, we called Wang Qiufen and learned that she is in stable condition and taking medicine. Original article written by Zengliang Zhang, translated by Maggie Li and edited by Yanyan Zhang Last week, I had the privilege to coordinate a music camp for young students at my house, with the help of my friends. On Monday morning at 9:30am, 9 mini musicians arrived - five pianists, three violinists, and one cellist. The morning flew by as we proceeded to fill the time with private music lessons, duet time, composer stories, snacks, and games. The first day was slightly hectic as none of us were entirely sure of what we were doing, but with each passing day, it became easier to manage the students and transition from one activity to the next.
Overall, the camp was a success! The students each told me they had thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of the camp, and we raised $1200 through camp tuition. All of it will go to Sahaya International: $1000 for constructing a house and the remaining $200 for 2 education scholarships. Article by Lauren Kam
