Ms. Zhou focuses on mental and psychological counseling for women in rural areas.
I went to Pingqiao district of Xinyang , Henan province in March. I visited 4 towns and gave 4 lectures. The issue that mattered most among the villagers was children’s education. Then they asked a lot of questions about health. I am not a doctor, so I had to teach them a few health exercises from the angle of disease prevention and health care. This time a volunteer met in Sichuan came with me. She taught villagers exercise-dance and knitting. The two projects had been developed when I was in rural areas of Sichuan, which were quite popular. We could organize women to read, receive health care tips and the right way to educate children by holding these activities. We were welcome everywhere and there were a lot of happy interactions. Women registered enthusiastically in reading club, dance club and knitting club. I instructed the local staff to divide them into groups and organize them to carry out activities respectively. In April, I will visit Henan again as a volunteer and implement follow-up work. I saw your photo accidentally today and I turned to the door of the art classroom. Looking outside, my eyes were full of tears. It seems I get a talkative ability, but it seems so hard for me to express my feelings at the moment. I was happy by seeing your smile. Thinking of the time when we were walking along the playground of the school, the time when we spent under the phoenix tree, you helped me how to comb and set my hair, it seems everything happened just yesterday. Every time when I walked along the road to school, I could not help noticing one of the trees, because you had carved my name and your name on the one of them. Dear respectable staff of TFish, Thank you for your professionalism for the public welfare and attention to our children. Thanks to your support and understanding, we made progress in spite of difficulties. Your high-efficient style in work made a model for us to set our own goals. We work with the children with disabilities who are from poor families, so our running costs could not be raised from the families. We had to rely on the supports from loving people in society before the supports from the government in place. We still stick to our commitments and responsibility and run our Home with the low payments for the teachers. We hope to record every day with the camera, but we do not have extra money to buy a better one. The camera bought 5 years ago has been fixed for several times and could not take nice pictures. We would like to say sorry for it to the staff of TFish, but we still believe we will be better. Thanks again on behalf of the children, teachers and parents of our Home. On March 6th, 2013, Cheng Fang was admitted by hospital with the money raised from different people after she had arranged everything well for her husband and son. After checking in, she was cooperative for various checks. She was in poor health and suddenly fainted during blood drawing, which scared all of us. Our biggest concern was her health. She was too weak to accept the operation. Anyway, it was our concern. The day before the operation, her sister and brother came to the hospital and took care of her. The family tie seemed so valuable at the moment. 3 siblings had not taken a picture for 20 years, so Cheng Fang asked me if I could take the picture for three of them. Hearing this, tears were almost running down from my eyes. I understood why Cheng Fang asked like that, because she had asked me, “Yun, will I be all right?” I knew what she meant and what her concern was. Sibling photo was a mental preparation for her. Blocks game is no difficult for the normal children, but it is not so easy for the children with mental retardation. It is difficult for them to learn. They could not only learn from the hands-on skills, but also train their brains. Meanwhile, the distance between the children and volunteers became close. They are far away from each other in physical distance, but their distance in psychology is so close. The children are getting closer to the volunteers from city vocational school. They know each other well and try to adapt to each other. They are growing up together. Cheng Fang is 29 this year. When she worked as a housekeeper in 2012, she always suffered from palpitations and shortness of breath. The kind employer took her to hospital. She was diagnosed congenital heart disease. There are 4 persons in her family. Her husband fell from the cliff when he was grazing cow in 2006. It had been 5 hours when he was found. Because of severe trauma in the head, and the best treatment time was missed, his intelligence was hurt. He acted like a child. About 60,000 RMB was spent for his husband’s hospital bills. Cheng Fang collected 30,000 RMB and borrowed 30,000 RMB for this sum. Her husband woke up after 26 days of coma, but the family sank deeply in debt. Early in March and with a foggy weather, some staff and a few volunteers visited a village located on a small mountain in Lantian county of Shanxi province. They also brought gifts donated by loving people. We visited a village preschool. The conditions were very poor. They just had few toys and books besides desks and chairs. The children in the kindergarten did not have much fun apart from playing with each other or listening stories from their teachers. By walking into the mountain, we arrived at our goal village. The village head gave us warm greetings and invited us to his house. According to his introduction, there are 68 households making their livings from the fields. The economy of the whole village is poor and dozens of young men in the village could not afford to be married. We told the village head that we would contact some enterprises and see if the young men could go out to work so that to ease the burden of their families. We left the village after giving them some gifts. We could not visit each household, but we would come again. On Mar 14, 2013, the volunteers took 3 computers donated by an enterprise as well as daily necessities to the students and teachers in Saijiawang Primary School. We were welcomed by smile faces on arriving at the school. The campus is shabby and the facilities are very simple. Many of windows do not have glasses. The students seldom wash their faces or brush their teeth due to the shortage of daily necessities, so the hygiene among them is poor. Some of the volunteers played games with them and some of them combed hair for the children and matched with nice hair decorations. We also distributed towels, toothbrushes, toothpastes and cups to them. Everyone said thank you to us. Then the volunteers taught them the right way to brush teeth and wash face. They were listening attentively. We were happy to see all of these. Original article written by Yulong Chen, translated by Maggie Li, edited by Yanyan Zhang |
