I Have Arrived at Summer CampI really like the summer camp. At the summer camp, we learned to respect, protect, and care for each other, like a huge family. During the summer camp, the teachers treated us very nicely. One day, we played a game called musical chairs. Brother Xiao Wen was really good at the game. He got up just as quickly as he sat down.
My First Summer CampThe camp taught me to never give up. It enabled me to realize the importance of self-reliance, self-esteem, being thankful, and cooperation.
TFish is hosting a 5K Walkathon at Baylands Park in Sunnyvale on Saturday, Oct 22, 2016, 9am. Walk to alleviate poverty in East Asia. Dear TFish friends, Please join us for our first TFish 5K Walkathon! Your participation will raise awareness and funds for poverty alleviation in East Asia. All donations and registration fees will go directly to helping impoverished children and families, including those with congenital heart disease and those who struggle to meet their basic needs. Register and find out more information at 5k.tfishfund.org. Start your own online fundraiser at fundraise.tfishfund.org. As we walk the 5k, we celebrate over 1,000 children who can walk now, after we have helped them overcome congenital heart disease. We also walk to support the hundreds of children who are still waiting for treatment. Let’s walk for them and with them to change their lives and others suffering from extreme poverty. Grateful for your support, TFish Team Longwan Caring Home is located in Dahua County, which was listed as one of the poorest counties in Guangxi Province. Longwan Caring Home is a big family consisting of orphans, single parents, and abandoned children. The normal living costs of the Home are covered by the plantation, breeding, and small business. Our partners donated about 100 picture books to Longwan. We are lucky to have a shelf with 100 books for our children! Each night, we have a story reading time for our children. Tonight we are going to read "No, David!" The story is about a mother and her son David. The children like the story very much. They like to draw on the wall as much as David did. One of the charming aspects of picture books is their capacity to transform. During the reading, we were often interrupted by the children’s applause and cheers. The story means more though with the participation. We try to bring in some creative dialogue instead of only reading stories. Little Red Scarf is in Lanzhou, Gansu province and provides financial support and encouragement to children suffering from congenital heart disease. In addition, they provide families with post-operative care and help the children sustain a healthy lifestyle.
I looked forward to the day that I would leave for summer camp, and I made all sorts of preparations.
On August 7, I once again received a call from Teacher Guan. She said that I could attend the summer camp the next day, and I was beyond excited. I couldn't sleep the whole night. Gansu Care is in Lanzhou, Gansu provinces and provides financial support and encouragement to children suffering from congenital heart disease. In addition, they provide families with post-operative care and help the children sustain a healthy lifestyle. Xiao Mei is 16 years old. In 2012 with the help from LRS, Xiao Mei received a successful heart surgery. There are 5 people in her family: father, mother, older brother, older sister and Xiao Mei. Her grandmother just passed away due to illness. Xiao Mei’s brother and sister are both in college. Xiao Mei’s father has been in poor health and unable to go out for working since last year. Since junior high school, Xiao Mei has rented a place in the city closed to her school. She takes care of cooking and herself. In this June, Xiao Mei was admitted to a local key high school. Xiao Mei will face a more intense school life. Lanzhou Care gave Xiao Mei an education allowance of ¥1950. We hope Xiao Mei will be studying harder for the high school, we also hope Xiao Mei will be admitted to college in three years, so that she can achieve her dream of being a rural teacher, to provide children in remote rural areas with same good education as children in the cities. Original article written by Guan Ying, translated and edited by Yanyan Zhang A Summer Camp Too Happy and Fun to ForgetWhile most people look at heart disease as something negative, I felt that I was blessed to have this heart disease. Without this heart disease, I would not have been able to come to this camp and experience such happiness. I secretly celebrated that I had this heart disease. I’ve never been to a summer camp before. I have never felt more blessed, happy, and warm-hearted than when I went out to play during this summer camp. What I didn’t expect is that the Little Red Scarf summer camp would let me feel blessed, happy, and warm all at once.
I felt blessed to be at a camp that gave me so much happiness. We were all very unified, like a team. This summer I attended the Little Red Scarf summer camp, where I met different friends from different parts of Gansu province. I had lots of fun during the camp and played many games. My favorite was called “A heart with a thousand knots.” In this game, we grouped up into a circle holding hands and each person remembered who was on their left and right sides. Our ordering would then be scrambled and then we would find a way to hold hands with our two original left-right partners, forming a huge “knot.” We then had to find a way to get back into the original ordering, slowly undoing the “knot.” On top of having fun, we would learn a new principle of life with each game. In addition to games, there were 4 volunteers that led our classes. They were all so great, especially Xiao Wen, who was always making us laugh.
The camp is very sincere and full of loving people. I also learned a lot. In the future, I want to be caring like all of them. When my younger brother was 4 years old, he had congenital heart disease. Due to conditions at home, my family had financial problems. Without the aid of Little Red Scarf, I do not know how we could have afforded the cost of the surgery. Thanks to the surgery, my brother is now slowly recovering. In 2014, I had the very fortunate opportunity to participate in the summer camp. I was very happy as I played together with many other children. In 2016, my brother and I came here. We met a bunch more friends. There were many amazing teachers, like teacher Chang. We even met two people called Jiaju and and Xihong. They are all always smiling and full of love.
